January in the Houston Garden
The garden in January can vary depending on when (or if) we’ve had a freeze. Starting in November, the Monarch Team makes sure we have plenty of frost-tolerant plants in our clients’ gardens so that even after a freeze the garden isn’t bare.
If there was a freeze in December, plants like peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants will not be around in January, however, there are many years like this year when we are still enjoying loads of cherry tomatoes in January if it did not freeze in December!
Broccoli shows off in January! Harvest when the broccoli head is the size of your fist and firm.
January is the time to grow loads of lettuce. The flavor of lettuce straight from the garden to the table is incredible!

Plant radishes every couple weeks for a continuous harvest. Radishes are typically ready 30-45 days after planting by seed!
Swiss Chard is a show-stopper in the January garden. Whether you’re growing the green variety or rainbow chard, it’s a beautiful and productive addition to the garden!
Bok Choy is a favorite in the January garden. Harvest outside leaves often instead of removing the entire plant for a continuous harvest!
Beets are a lot of fun to grow in the winter garden and are oftentimes ready to harvest in January if you planted in October.
