Seeds or Transplants?

Wondering what plants you can start from seed in your Houston garden? It really depends on the type of gardener you are, how much space you have, and how much time you want to devote to seed starting.

The short answer: You can start just about any plant from seed if you start them indoors under grow-lights and baby the plants (this takes time).

The long answer: If you don’t want to set up a mini-nursery in your home or garage with shelves and grow-lights, the next easiest way to start plants from seed is called “direct sowing.” This means sticking the seeds directly into your garden beds outside. Direct sowing is possible in Houston’s climate, but only with a handful of food-bearing plants.

Below is a list of plants we direct sow into our clients’ garden beds:

Arugula (we use a combination of seeds and transplants)

Basil (we use a combination of seeds and transplants)

Beets (we use a combination of seeds and transplants)

Bush Beans

Carrot

Cucumber

Lettuces (we use a combination of seeds and transplants)

Melon

Pole Beans

Radish

Squash

Sugar Snap Peas

If it’s not on this list, we use transplants instead of seeds!
