Gomphrena can grow from early spring until it freezes and then it COMES BACK after a freeze! Three cheers for this adorable perennial!
Gomphrena is so beautiful planted on the corners of raised beds or in areas of landscaping that need some height and whimsy.
Gomphrena comes in two sizes in our area: one size gets about 2’ tall. The other is a dwarf variety and stays far more compact and under 12”. We use the taller variety! It’s pure magic in a garden bed!
Gomphrena comes in several colors! Pink, purple, and red!
Gomphrena is drought tolerant and no joke - it thrives when Houston is an absolute inferno. It can’t get hot enough to phase it. If the devil grows flowers in hell - he’s growing Gomphrena!
Pollinators love it!
Pruning it is a breeze. It takes as much time and skill to prune it as a three year old who has decided to cut her own bangs. Grab the plant - pull it together like a ponytail and give it a haircut. How do you know exactly where to cut it? Ya don’t! Just trim it. Promise. It will be fine.
It’s so pretty in cut flower arrangements! The dainty little Pom poms and stiff stems are the perfect plant to pop into a flower arrangement!
It holds color when dried, so you can use your clippings for wreaths, dried flower arrangements, or similar crafts.
Gomphrena is considered a Texas Superstar! To have this label, a plant has to undergo several years worth of field trials from @txextension and @tamuagrilife . These plants are not babied at all. They are stuck in the ground in regular soil, not given pesticides, and only get minimal water. If the plant performs well consistently over time? It’s deemed a Texas Superstar! This means even if you have a black thumb - you can grow these plants!
